Spirituality is a term that is difficult to define. It means something different for each of us. Generally, it means thinking about something bigger than ourselves, focusing less on material things and more on the human spirit. It might mean meditating or getting in touch with a psychic, like those on the medium chat website. But what has this got to do with your diet? 

 

There’s a great connection between spirituality and food. We eat to fuel and sustain ourselves, but we also eat to celebrate an occasion or connect with others. At times, we might refrain from eating at all. So, how can you eat more spiritually? 

Practice mindful eating 

Mindfulness means acknowledging and managing your emotions and physical sensations. So, mindful eating isn’t a diet. It means truly experiencing your food and choosing food that truly nourishes your body. No two people will practice mindful eating in the same way. It is entirely about what your body needs and how it responds to certain foods. Practicing mindful eating can be hugely beneficial in allowing yourself to truly realize when you are full, and can reduce psychological distress such as depression or eating disorders. Not sure where to start? First, try slowing down, eating away from the TV and thinking about the way your body feels when you’re eating. The time to stop is when you are full. 

A plant-based diet

Spirituality and veganism go hand in hand. This is because veganism encourages an understanding of every living thing. Spiritualism encourages a togetherness of the world and considering how best not to harm our planet. Not only is a vegan diet kind to animals, but it’s better for the environment, too. So, if you want to become more spiritual in your eating habits, why not try a plant-based diet? There are many delicious recipes to try that avoid meat, fish and dairy. From vegan brownies to flavorsome curries, a plant-based diet can provide all the nutrients you need, while still being totally delicious. You are what you eat may be a cliché, but it’s more realistic than you might think. 

The emotional message of food

Spiritual people believe that food and emotions are highly connected. Our food cravings are often based around what we’re feeling. For example, if we’re feeling sad or depressed, we may turn to an unhealthy meal to make us feel better. Being tired or low might make us want caffeine or sugar. Food can provide a huge comfort in times of trouble. So, to eat spiritually means to understand the emotional needs beneath our cravings. Instead of reaching for a thick, gooey chocolate pudding, what might we be feeling to make us have this desire? And is there a way of satisfying that feeling without using food? By listening to your emotions, you will be able to deal with them properly. This doesn’t mean not enjoying what you’re eating, but simply allowing yourself to consider the meaning of your cravings and gain a better understanding of yourself.
