Alright, picture this: Anaheim, buzzing, electric. You walk into Natural Products Expo West 2025 and it’s like stepping into the future of wellness. Forget your step counter, you’ll be clocking miles just breathing the innovation. Seriously, this place was packed – attendance records? Shattered! It felt like everyone on the planet was there, all hungry for the next big thing in natural products.
And “big” is an understatement. The show floor? A labyrinth of cutting-edge ideas. We’re talking products that weren’t just tweaks on old concepts, but full-blown category revolutions. I spent three days diving headfirst into this whirlwind, and let me tell you, I barely scratched the surface. My feet? They’re still recovering, and I’m pretty sure I averaged at least six miles of pure, unadulterated exploration each day. It was that huge, that exciting, and that mind-blowing
Plant-Based Protein: An Omnipresent Force
The plant-based revolution continues its relentless march, with protein being integrated into virtually every product imaginable. From savory snacks and ready-to-eat meals to protein-packed beverages and even desserts, plant-based protein was ubiquitous. Exhibitors highlighted novel protein sources, including pea, fava bean, and even algae, emphasizing both nutritional value and sustainable sourcing.
Functional Mushrooms and Adaptogens Take Center Stage
Consumers are increasingly seeking more benefits from their food. Functional foods and drinks, fortified with mushrooms like reishi and lion’s mane, as well as adaptogens like ashwagandha, were a prominent trend. I sampled every type of mushroom product imaginable from Mushroom Jerky, Gummies and ‘meat’ grown by fungus! Functional mushroom beverages and coffees were popular, promising a range of benefits, from enhanced cognitive function to stress reduction. Ashwagandha, in particular, was a star ingredient, appearing in everything from sparkling waters to pre-workout blends.
Energy Drinks: Natural Boosts and Nootropic Nuances
The energy drink market showed no signs of slowing down, with a surge in natural alternatives. Exhibitors showcased beverages powered by green tea, guayusa, and other natural caffeine sources. Many also incorporated nootropics, ingredients that enhance cognitive function, catering to the growing demand for sustained energy and mental clarity without the jitters.
Meat Alternatives: Chunk Steals the Show
While the plant-based meat category has matured, innovation continues. This year, Chunk Foods, a newcomer to the scene, generated significant buzz with its realistic plant-based steak. With the cleanest label in the category, Chunk’s products are crafted with just a few natural ingredients, and are free from preservatives, thickeners, additives, or binders. Attendees raved about its texture and flavor, claiming it was indistinguishable from the real thing. Chunk’s success highlighted the industry’s focus on bridging the gap between plant-based and conventional meat, aiming to attract a wider consumer base.

Clean and Lean Home Care
The “clean” trend extended beyond food and beverages, permeating the home care sector. Products formulated with natural, non-toxic ingredients were abundant, reflecting a growing consumer awareness of household chemical safety. Companies like Tru Earth exemplified this trend, showcasing their innovative laundry detergent sheets and plastic-free dish tabs. These products offer effective cleaning power while drastically reducing plastic waste, a significant benefit for environmentally conscious consumers. Tru Earth’s laundry detergent sheets and plastic free dish tabs, demonstrate the industries move to reduce plastic waste, and the effectiveness of concentrated cleaning products.
Immunity Boosting Supplements: Propolis and Royal Jelly Reigns Supreme
With a heightened focus on wellness, immunity-boosting supplements remained a strong trend. Many brands featured propolis, a resinous substance collected by bees, known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Sustainable harvesting practices were emphasized, reflecting a growing consumer awareness of ethical and environmentally responsible sourcing. One of my favorite finds was Medex, a company out of Slovenia. Medex has been operating sustainably for decades. The company, which established and developed beekeeping in the former Yugoslavia, has grown into a company that spreads beekeeping around the world. In doing so, we are achieving a significant number of UNESCO’s seventeen sustainable development goals: eradicating poverty, hunger, caring for the environment, and empowering women. Beekeeping contributes to all of these goals.
Sustainable Packaging: Ditching Plastic
A significant shift towards sustainable packaging was evident, with brands actively seeking alternatives to traditional plastics. Exhibitors showcased innovative solutions, including compostable materials, recycled paper-based packaging, and biodegradable films. The emphasis on minimizing environmental impact resonated strongly with attendees.
Expo West 2025 served as a microcosm of the evolving consumer landscape, where health, sustainability, and innovation converge. The trends showcased at the event are poised to shape the natural products industry for years to come, reflecting a growing global commitment to well-being and environmental consciousness.
