Cute Fruit Alert! Kiwi Berries!

Look what I found in the berry section today at Sprouts! Kiwi Berries! I have never seen these cuties before and was super excited to get some home because I love kiwis. These ‘berries’ are about the size of an olive and have smooth non-fuzzy…

The Makeup Eraser Meets Handee

The Makeup Eraser Meets Handee

I love make-up and must have at least a little mascara on when I leave the house! I have a huge assortment of facial cleansers, toners and scrubs, but they are intended for adding balance to my skin type – not necessarily removing make-up. In…

Fall Felted Ball Garland

Fall Felted Ball Garland

Today’s crafty diversion – a Fall felt ball garland. These are easy to make and fun to decorate with for any season. I quickly strung together about 30 felt balls or so with a thick needle and embroidery thread. As to not impale my hand,…

Re-purposed Planter Box – Put a Bird on it!

Re-purposed Planter Box – Put a Bird on it!

We stopped at the Rogue Creamery in Central Point, Oregon over the summer to sample some of their delicious blue cheese. There were these very cool vintage cheese sinks in front of the cheese factory building that were repurposed into planter boxes. I believe the…

An Afternoon Cheer Up Tea

An Afternoon Cheer Up Tea

So my eleven year old daughter was celebrating the beginning of summer with a friend at a pool. In the midst of some enthusiastic dancing, my daughter accidentally launched her foot into one of the many decorative poolside boulders. I was at least 50 feet away, yet I could hear the ‘crack’ of a bone. She crumpled into a heap and I knew this wasn’t going to be pretty. After a Doctor visit, our worst fears were confirmed. She cracked a bone in her foot and was to be ‘non-active’ and off of it for 6 weeks. Well, there goes summer. I immediately canceled camps as to open up spots for other campers.

My daughter sat in her room reading, but mostly sulking and bummed out. I felt so bad for her. Some mild goofing off for a few seconds had just turned into a long boring haul for her.

I thought about getting her a little gift or token to help cheer her up, but I do feel that kids appreciate experiences more than stuff, so I decided with give her a formal afternoon tea. She had recently shown interest in fancy tea, so this could be a fun experience.

As she was still her in room reading, it was really easy to set up everything and surprise her.

Pretty tea cups are easy to come by in thrift shops. If you can’t find a matching set of at least 4, then go for mismatched ones. I also like to grab old fashioned ‘bridge plates’. They are often square or oval with separated sections within the plate.

  • We had Earl Grey tea with milk and sugar.
  • Scones with lemon curd – I regret not getting clotted cream. Scones just need that extra bit of cool creamy fat with the tangy lemon.
  • Crustless tuna sandwiches. PB&J would have been okay as well, but I was trying to get some protein in her to heal that darn foot. Yeah, I’m neurotic.
  • Fresh sliced strawberries
  • Mini Broccoli & Cheese Quiches – they were store bought. Normally I would make my own, but this was a spur of the moment gig. I did add a slice of tomato and basil on top before baking to make it ‘appear’ like I put more effort into it. Shhh.

Fancy Afternoon Backyard Tea

I set a table up outside with fresh flowers and then called her out to ‘lunch’. She hobbled out on crutches and boom – there was that big smile again!

Lunch was served and after four cups of tea, we were all highly caffeinated, full and in a great mood.

South of the Border Spicy Shrimp Salad with Lime Dressing

South of the Border Spicy Shrimp Salad with Lime Dressing

This salad is quite frankly a jaw-dropper. It has just about everything but the kitchen sink and is a meal in itself. It’s perfect for warm late summer, fall evenings and a healthy start to football season. You can change out toppings per your preference.…

Doozy Druzy Ring

Doozy Druzy Ring

I feel like Druzy jewelry came on the fashion scene many years ago, and I’m embarrassed to say I probably saw one advertised on HSN while channel flipping. While they are not semi-precious they are really fascinating. Druse, Drusy (or renamed Druzy to make it…

Vintage Wood Bobbin Spools are Rubbish

Vintage Wood Bobbin Spools are Rubbish

Do you have a giant textile factory and need to replace your wooden bobbin spools? No, neither do I. However, I was attracted to these beautiful vintage wooden spools because they reminded me of a time when clothing was actually made on our continent by…

A Pretty Cheese Selection

A Pretty Cheese Selection

Summer evenings are perfect for simple appetizers simply because it’s too damn hot to bother with anything else. When having guests over, I like to have a minimum of three plated appetizers. Most everyone I know loves cheese, but they do not necessarily LIKE the…
