My Spring Setup with the Vego Garden Elevated Garden Bed

Hey fellow gardeners! Spring has officially sprung here in San Diego, and if you’re like me, you’re itching to get your hands in the dirt. This season, I’ve upgraded my patio with the Vego Garden Elevated Garden Bed (on wheels!), and it’s completely changing how I handle our unpredictable coastal weather.

Why the Vego Garden Raised Garden Bed is a Must for San Diego Spring

We all know the drill: one morning it’s thick “May Gray” coastal fog, and by noon it’s a scorcher. That’s why I’m obsessed with having an elevated garden on wheels.

  • Chasing the Sun: When the fog lingers, I simply wheel my bed to the edge of the patio to catch every possible ray.

  • Protecting “Baby” Starters: Young seedlings are sensitive! During those first few “blazing” spring days, I wheeled my garden into partial shade to let my plants acclimate without wilting. I have found that if I put my babies in full sun right away, they can often wilt quickly and they get damaged, or struggle to thrive. Introducing my seedlings to full sun slowly over a few days seems to jumpstart the growth.

  • Bend-Free Gardening: As a 5’10” elevated person myself, this raised garden bed is the perfect elevated height. I’m doing zero kneeling or bending and it makes “tending” feel like “relaxing.”

  • Wheel it away! The Vego Garden on wheels is also so convenient if I need to clean my patio. I can wheel my plant babies to the side of my yard, clean and then wheel everything back in. Love the wheels locks too so it stays in place!

The “Tomato Trio”: A Companion Planting Secret

I’m currently prepping for a massive tomato harvest! To give them the best start in the 2’x4′ Vego Garden space, I’ve paired my various tomatoes with Marigolds and Basil.

Pro-Tip: Marigolds and Basil aren’t just for aesthetics.
Marigolds are not just cheery in color, but their root system is stinky to bugs and actually helps repel harmful root-knot nematodes in the soil. In fact, I won’t plant ANY veggies without a few marigolds in the mix.
Basil is also a great herb to plant with tomatoes. Their strong scent also acts as a general pest deterrent. Plus, they attract beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings, which are natural predators to aphids.

As the Vego Garden is on wheels, I can wheel it to my grass to water (for drainage) it and then wheel it back to my patio.

More Savings, Less Stress

One of the best perks of this specific Vego Garden model is the 12″ soil depth. It uses 60% less soil than a standard 32″ tall bed. High quality organic soil is PRICEY, so it’s great to to be able to save on this cost. You can also put down a layer of mulch on the bottom if you want to save a bit more. Just make sure to leave about 10″ of soil so the plants get full nutrition.  I used Google to calc out how many bags of soil I needed and it was spot on! (I used large bags)

The Vego Garden raised garden bed on wheels is a back saver.

Between the pest protection of being off the ground and the ability to dodge the San Diego heat at a moment’s notice, my spring garden has never looked better.
