The Quest for the Perfect Crab Cake in Williamsburg, VA

The Quest for the Perfect Crab Cake in Williamsburg, VA

When you think of Williamsburg, Virginia, your mind probably jumps straight to cobblestone streets, living history, and maybe a ghost tour or two. But if you’re a seafood lover, there is an entirely different kind of historical pursuit waiting for you here: hunting down the absolute best crab cake in town.

Because we are sitting right on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, the standards around here are exceptionally high. We aren’t looking for those heavily breaded, hockey-puck style crab cakes stuffed with filler. We are looking for jumbo lump blue crab, just enough binder to hold it together, a whisper of old-school seasoning, and a perfect golden sear.

If you are planning a trip to the historic triangle and want to eat like a local, skip the tourist traps. Here are the front-runners for the ultimate crab cake crown in Williamsburg, ranked by a local who takes their seafood very seriously.

The Contenders: Where to Find the Gold Standard

1. The Undisputed Champion: Fat Tuna Grill & Oyster House

If you are looking for a spectacular crab cake that is completely focused on the freshness of the catch, Fat Tuna Grill & Oyster House on Richmond Road takes the crown. This is the ultimate destination for true crab lovers. Their crab cake is a masterclass in seafood execution: a massive portion that is absolutely full of sweet, fresh-tasting crab with absolutely no filler that I could taste. It is perfectly seasoned, incredibly fresh, and lets the natural, delicate flavor of the crab shine through beautifully. The plating is well, less than. Super basic, and no frills. This is the type of restaurant where you can get quality seafood and watch a baseball or soccer game at the same time. The water also comes in a plastic cup, which I though dragged my beautiful crab cake, but I’m still ranking this number one for the crab quality and freshness.

  • The Vibe: A lively, casual, and highly welcoming local oyster bar and grill. Family friendly. It’s the perfect spot to pull up a chair, enjoy some raw bar favorites, and dig into incredible coastal cooking.

  • The Price Point: Moderate to Premium. You can enjoy their legendary Crab Cake Sandwich (a 4-oz golden-seared lump crab cake on a toasted roll with fries and coleslaw) for $19.99. If you want the full feast, their Traditional Chesapeake Crab Cakes Entree (served with potato, vegetable, and bistro sauce) runs $34.99.

2. The CLOSE Runner-Up: The Archer Restaurant (Gabriel Archer Tavern) at the Williamsburg Winery

Coming in as a close second favorite is the Gabriel Archer Tavern (locally loved as The Archer), located on the stunning grounds of the Williamsburg Winery. Dining here feels like an escape, and the food matches the scenery. Their crab cake is exceptionally large, featuring a beautifully light exterior coating and an interior that is generously stuffed with premium crab meat. It’s perfectly balanced and wonderfully seasoned.

  • The Vibe: Cozy, rustic-chic tavern charm overlooking sun-dappled vineyards. It’s the quintessential spot for a relaxing afternoon or a lovely dinner paired with local Virginia wine. You may request outside or inside. In the heat of the summer, we chose inside, but if I’m being honest, I prefer outside on the patio as the inside feels cramped to me!

  • The Price Point: Moderate-to-High. You can opt for the hearty Crab Cake Sandwich at lunch for $18, or indulge in the full Crab Cake Dinner at night for $35, which comes elegantly plated with black lentils, asparagus, and a delicate sorrel cream. They also offer a great assortment of fresh local oysters! This is a fantastic place to bring people from out of town, graduations and enjoy elevated dining. Make sure to do a little wine tasting before dinner, just make sure to check when the wine tasting room closes.

3. The Historic Classic: Berret’s Seafood Restaurant & Taphouse Grill

Located right in Merchants Square—just a stone’s throw from the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg—Berret’s has been a regional seafood staple since 1983. If you want to sit outside, soak up the historic energy, and enjoy regional seafood, it’s a fun and convenient stop. Taste-wise, the flavor is definitely there and it’s quite tasty, but compared to the top tier, it features a smaller portion size and noticeably more filler than its competitors. As it was one million degrees outside, we ate in the spacious inside.

  • The Vibe: Relaxed and lively, especially out on the Taphouse Grill deck where you can often catch live music.

  • The Price Point: Moderate. Berret’s offers a lot of flexibility depending on how hungry you are. You can get a single sautéed backfin crab cake entree with country ham and house tartar sauce for $24 (or two cakes for $36). If you want a bit of everything, their iconic “Original Blue Plate”—which bundles a crab cake with she-crab soup, baked oysters Rockefeller, and grilled shrimp—runs $36.   The crab cakes are more breaded and were a little more fried tasting (on the outside), but the crab was still tasty. Confusingly, they serve sweet sticky buns before the meal. I’m not really a sweets person, so I wasn’t super excited by it, but my guests were! I also forgot to photo the crab cakes, so here’s a picture of the sticky buns with currants. This is also a great place to get fresh oysters – and oysters are almost always a happy hour item!

🦀 The Golden Rule of a Great Crab Cake

A truly authentic Chesapeake-style crab cake should always let the sweet, delicate flavor of the blue crab be the star of the show. If you slice into it and it looks like a muffin or tastes primarily of breadcrumbs, keep moving!

The Verdict

So, who takes the crown?

If you want a classic, laid-back afternoon sitting outside near the historic district with a local brew in hand, Berret’s is a convenient, tasty choice. If you want to pair a large, beautifully seasoned, lightly-coated crab cake with a glass of local wine in a gorgeous vineyard setting, make a reservation at The Archer.

BONUS RESTAURANT TO CONSIDER:

A bit of a drive from Williamsburg, but YROC Bar and Grill is worth checking out. They have very fresh seafood options right on the water – the view is amazing! They also have $5 Beer Mugs (all day) on Monday. Relaxed, friendly, casual and very pretty.
