The Many Health Benefits of PRI New Zealand Manuka Honey

The Many Health Benefits of PRI New Zealand Manuka Honey

Years ago, my little family and I lived on the tiny island of Rarotonga in the South Pacific for a summer. We befriended an actual descendant of an island princess and her Kiwi husband. Our new friends had a family emergency, so they said they were off to New Zealand for a week and asked if I could watch their baby pig. Sure, I like pigs. The husband asked if he could bring us back some Manuka Honey from New Zealand as a Thank You. I said, “Sure, I like honey.” Not getting the reaction he anticipated, he said, “No, Manuuuuuuka Honey,” this time with emphasis. I still drew a blank but tried to look appreciative and again thanked him – What’s the big deal?

A week later he returned and gave me the most luxurious thick, dark honey that was bursting with flavor. During my friend’s absence, I also had time to research, as I had no idea Manuka was the ‘Mercedes of Honey’. This was, sort of, a big deal.

I recently had the opportunity to sample a variety of Manuka honey products by PRI based in New Zealand, and it was a giddy experience. Not only is Manuka thick and luxurious, but it is the most healthful honey on the planet – and that claim can be backed up by testing & data.

PRI utilizes family-owned beekeepers to harvest Real Manuka in New Zealand from the Manuka Tree (Leptospermum scoparium).

When shopping for Manuka, look for the number next to it. The number represents the MGO (Methylglyoxal) level. This is a compound found in Manuka honey that is believed to be responsible for many of its potential health benefits, particularly its antibacterial properties. The MGO (Methylglyoxal) content over 300+ mg/kg in honey refers to the concentration of Methylglyoxal present in 1 kilogram of that specific honey. So, the higher the MGO content, the stronger the potential antibacterial properties are believed to be.

You’ll also note that the price increases along with the MGO number. I am sampling the PRI Australian Manuka Honey 300+ which is chock full of health benefits.

PRI Manuka Honey & Propolis Lozenges

I like to BEE prepared (See what I did there) and have lozenges on hand for those sudden late-night sore throats. Why do they always start at night? I love the PRI Manuka and Propolis lozenges as they combine the potential benefits of Manuka honey with propolis, a resinous substance produced by bees that has some antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Not only does the honey help soothe a sore throat, but the Manuka may have some antibacterial properties and the propolis is known for its antioxidant properties, supporting the immune system.

PRI also offers sweet honey treats like the very tasty Manuka Honey Caramels – Contains Manuka Honey 50+ from New Zealand.  If you love caramels, you’ll go crazy for these – they are soft, don’t stick in your teeth and they are made with ‘better for you’ ingredients.

I can’t wait to bring the PRI Ginger Manuka Honey Nuggets (like hard candy) on our upcoming sailing trip, just in case one of us gets a queasy stomach out on the seas as ginger can help with that feeling.
