Monkey pod wood was a popular and fancy choice for serving salad in the 60’s and 70’s. If you look closely, Alice from Brady Bunch mixes up her greens in one of these hip wooden bowls.

The acacia tree is the source of these beautiful wooden bowls. Renamed Monkey Pod because it probably had a better marketing appeal to those looking for tropical decor. The branches of the acacia often be dangerous because they break off easily and fall in tropical storms. Much like the danger you will create when you bust these bowls out at your next retro dinner party and guests spontaneously bust into some disco moves!

This complete set of eight (8) has no cracks. There are some minor scratches and one bowl seems to be a little lighter than the rest, but otherwise this is a solid vintage set. To make them shine like new, rub some food-safe mineral oil into them.

I envision salad in the roundy big portion and then some olives in the narrow part. Every meal in the 70’s was better with olives.

I remember back in 6th grade I had a huge yellow Snoopy lunch box. I loved it will all my heart.  Everyday I was invited to eat with Snoopy (per the text invite on the box) and he was SO much nicer than those private school kids. Yes, you know who you are. When I opened the giant plastic beast, it also helped create my personal space at the school lunch table. Everyone had huge lunch boxes back then and cartoon characters were cool – even in middle school.  We all joyously plucked out our food as if it were from a treasure box.

Had I kept my Snoopy lunch box and bequeathed it to my daughter, she would have dissolved into a puddle of embarrassment if forced to carry that cartoon behemoth. She has a compact little bento box type Tupperware deal surrounded by an insulated zippered cover. Everything is squished and compartmentalized. There is a little hand sanitizer with glitter that hangs from her mini-lunch box because there are germs now in this world. She is squished at her lunch table with elbows in her sides, and she almost never has enough time to finish eating. I can see why lunch is no longer a joyous occasion as it once was when I was a kid. I told her about my cool Snoopy lunch box and how we had enough time to eat AND fold up paper triangles to play finger-kick football. She rolled her eyes. Mom, you’re so lame.

Before Snoopy lunch boxes, lunch pails were heavy duty. Here’s a very, very old lunch tin that was used at the turn of the century. The top part is where the food was stored, and the bottom portion was most likely where ice was kept to keep the lunch cold. There is a round melted spot on top of the pail as if this was owned by a metal worker and they placed something extremely hot on top of it? The outside is oxidized and has a good vintage color. The inside tin part that has been protected is still shiny for the most part. This is a very cool find! Not many of these old pails left on the planet. Now only if kids would start using these again. Just think about how much food, personal space and fun they could have with these! The kids of today would also look pretty bas-ass.
