We recently had the opportunity to take a quick trip to Grenada due to an amazing air-mile deal. When I Google mapped the island, I thought that since Grenada is small we would be able to cover most of the island in no time. Wow, was I wrong! The roads are narrow with steep drop-offs which is harrowing for driving on the left-hand side (as Americans). The locals also drive really fast, so that added to our anxiety. However, I wouldn’t let that deter anyone and we would absolutely do it again. Realistic planning is necessary as you don’t want to spend most of your trip on the road.
If you enjoy large resorts like Sandals, then this is not the recommended itinerary for you. We prefer quieter locations with beautiful nature. Often this means driving a good distance, no matter where we are in the world. This is what we did on our trip and it was absolutely amazing!
Suggested 3-day itinerary for a trip to Grenada
Day 1:
- Start your day with a visit to Grand Etang National Park, located in the mountains of the north side. Go for a hike to the lake, or take a boat ride on the calm waters. Pack hiking shoes or shoes that can get muddy as any rain can make the trails mucky.
- In the afternoon, visit the Belmont Estate, a working cocoa plantation and chocolate factory. Learn about the process of making chocolate, and sample some of the delicious treats. This is an EXCELLENT stop for lunch as they serve beautiful and fresh vegetarian food – I can’t recommend this stop enough!
- In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants in Grand Anse, the island’s most popular beach.
Day 2:
- Take a day trip to Carriacou, a small island located just off the coast of Grenada. Spend the day exploring the island’s charming villages, beaches, and bars.
- In the afternoon, go snorkeling or diving in the crystal-clear waters around Carriacou.
Day 3:
- Relax on Grand Anse Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Swim, sunbathe, or go for a boat ride.
- In the afternoon, visit the Dougaldston Estate, a former plantation that has been converted into a hotel and spa. Enjoy a massage or other spa treatment, and take a dip in the infinity pool overlooking the ocean.
This is just a suggestion, of course, and you can tailor the itinerary to your own interests and preferences. No matter what you choose to do, you’re sure to have a wonderful time in Grenada.
