While on a recent vacation, my dog sitter sent a photo of my pup looking downcast. Apparently, all the other dogs were enjoying fresh food dinners, while my poor pup seemed unimpressed with her dry kibble. It made me wonder if I was neglecting her dietary needs.
Truth be told, I’d been constantly switching between high-end kibbles, hoping to find one my dog truly loved. But the cycle was frustrating – a week of excitement over a new kibble followed by a giant bag of expensive food she’d eventually turn up her nose to and refuse. Her continual pickiness prompted me to research fresh food diets, and after reading about the benefits, I decided to give Nom Nom Gently Cooked Dog Food a try.
Nom Nom Pros: Gently Cooked with Potential Perks
Proponents of Nom Nom’s gently cooked diet for dogs tout several possible advantages:
- Improved Digestion: The gentle cooking process supposedly makes the food easier to digest for dogs, leading to better nutrient absorption, increased energy, and smaller stools.
- More Energy: Gently cooked food is believed to provide dogs with more usable energy due to improved nutrient absorption.
- Stronger Immune System: Nom Nom’s food is packed with vitamins and minerals that may support a dog’s immune system.
- Skin and Coat Health: The premium ingredients and lack of fillers in Nom Nom’s food could contribute to a shinier coat, healthier skin, and reduced shedding.
However, the key questions remain: Would my pup enjoy the switch to gently cooked food, and more importantly, would I find the process manageable?
Addy is a lab retriever mix rescue dog found starving on the streets of Mexico (Good grief!! Why is she SO picky?) and weighs around 50 pounds. I filled out the short, online questionnaire which tailors the meals according to your dog’s unique caloric needs then Nom Nom sent me the pre-portioned meals. BLACK FRIDAY SALE! Possible Nom Nom Cons & Things to Note:
As the food is frozen, be sure to order the food when you are in town so you can put it away safely into a freezer. The box arrives packed with dry ice, so it will be fine sitting on your porch during the day, but ultimately it needs to get into a fridge. Also, it’s a lot of meal bags, so make sure you have freezer space available. I now get the allure of a second ‘garage fridge’!
As my pup has no known allergies, we ordered all four meal options. We received – Beef Mash, Turkey Fare, Pork Potluck, and Chicken Cuisine. I peeked at the frozen meals while putting them away and everything looked like REAL food and it is! Unlike *raw meats that can harbor bacteria and make your dog sick, the Nom Nom’s recipes are crafted by a board certified veterinary nutritionist and each ingredient is gently cooked to seal in nutrients. I absolutely love how transparent they are with their ingredient list. The included Info card listed the guaranteed analysis of each pack with calories, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and moisture.
*The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and animal nutrition experts do not recommend feeding a raw food diet for dogs – this is why Nom Nom is the better safer choice!
As I do have a lot of kibble left, I thought it would be best to use Nom Nom as a meal enhancer, plus it’s a gentler way to introduce a new food. Per instructions, I removed some kibble from her normal serving and supplemented in the rest with the freshly-made Nom Nom food, in this case, the Turkey Fare.

Needless to say, Addy devoured her food with gusto and renewed enthusiasm. She even licked the bowl spotless and then looked at me with searching eyes. “Mother, when may the next meal time be?”
Ok, so Addy is very happy, but how is this going for me?
Thankfully, feeding my dog the Nom Nom meals is super easy! I pulled three bags out of the freezer and put them in my fridge to slowly dethaw. As I use up a bag, I simply put a new frozen one in the fridge (behind the thawing ones). I split one bag for breakfast and use the rest at dinner mixed with her kibble. So far it’s going well, but it is using up a good amount of my freezer space.
Another benefit I’ve noticed – her poops are smaller. I am guessing that if I switched her to 100% Nom Nom freshly-made food, her poos would be even smaller as she would be utilizing more of the fresh nutrients and not expelling out fillers. And, again, I’ve been buying pricey kibble so it’s not like I was feeding her junk to start with. It is amazing to see the reduction in waste with a gently cooked food diet and less cleanup for me is a MAJOR WIN!
UPDATE AUGUST 15, 2024
Can I transition my dog to Nom Nom gradually?
Absolutely! We started using Nom Nom as a meal topper and then incrementally increased the amount. She now gets one bowl of kibble a day and one package of Nom Nom. She had absolutely zero stomach issues and she is so thrilled with dinner time!
Although I feel like I am giving more to eat, she actually trimmed down a little bit on her midsection, which she needed to do. I feel like she is getting the best nutrition and she has tons of energy. Her poops are indeed smaller and she has even started shedding a bit less, which is surprising because it’s summertime. We are just very very happy and will continue on the program!
Nom Nom Dog Food Cost Factor
The Nom Nom food is more expensive than plain ol’ kibble, but considering I spend about $100 a month on Addy’s dry food, I think the freshly-made food is a better way to feed my dog. We’ve had several unused bags that I’ve donated to local pet charities when she goes into food strike mode. I am thrilled that I can use Nom Nom as a meal enhancer and not waste food anymore!
Here’s a cost estimate if the food is used BY ITSELF and not mixed in with kibble & based on weight:
Sample chart:
Dog’s Weight | Approx. Cost per Week |
10 pounds | $25 |
30 pounds | $40 |
60 pounds | $65 |
120 pounds | $100 |
Now if you use Nom Nom as a meal enhancer like I am doing, then the cost is half of that. In comparison to what I’m spending on Miss Addy’s dry kibble, this seems like a great way to go. I can stretch out the kibble she’s not excited about and mix in the vital nutrients of Nom Nom’s meals to supplement her with quality ingredients.
