If you are navigating perimenopause or post-menopause and have noticed your hair volume taking a sudden nosedive, please know you are not alone. A perfect storm of aging, a suffocating scalp environment, and plummeting hormones can leave our hair feeling fragile and thin.
My own hair journey hit a dramatic turning point after breast cancer treatment. The necessary medications completely obliterated my estrogen—and my hair along with it.
Desperate for solutions, I embarked on a trial-and-error mission. Today, my hair has thinned out considerably from its original glory, and while I’ll never have massively thick locks again, I have found a regimen that significantly increased my volume, stopped the crazy shedding, and made me feel like myself again.
If you’re ready to get your volume back, here is the exact routine that turned things around for me. Disclosure: there are affiliate links in this post! These are ALL products I personally use, but if you purchase through my links, I will earn a small commission.
1. Scalp Care: The Ultimate Reset Button
Think of your scalp like a garden: if the soil is clogged and compacted, new seeds can’t sprout.
The Secret Weapon: Go get a deep scalp cleanse at a Korean Hair Spa.
What to Expect: Most reputable spas will take a micro-photo of your scalp to show you years of product buildup and dead skin scaling. It’s equal parts shocking and satisfying! Their intense, specialized cleaning frees the scalp of that suffocating outer layer of debris, allowing new baby hairs to break through the surface effortlessly.
My Experience: Almost immediately after my first session, I had a halo of new baby hairs sprouting. I’ll admit, I was incredibly anxious that the intensive treatment might pull out what little hair I had left, but it did the exact opposite. Do your research, find a reputable spa, ask questions, and give your scalp a fresh, clean slate. It is worth every penny.
2. The Shampoo Rotation: Cleanse vs. Volume
I have tried countless products, but these are the true standouts that actually deliver results without leaving a heavy, greasy film behind. I alternate between two systems to get the best of both worlds.
For the Deep Clean: BOMME Revitalizing Scalp Shampoo They sell a fantastic full set that includes vitamins and a hair tonic. Admittedly, when life gets busy, I sometimes forget the tonic—but the scalp shampoo itself is non-negotiable. It leaves my head feeling incredibly fresh and my hair sparkly clean with absolutely zero buildup. Plus, the fresh herbal scent is amazing. I use this every other wash.
For the Fluffy Fullness: Divi Shampoo & Conditioner System In between my BOMME washes, I use the Divi system. Volumizing products often leave hair feeling weighed down or greasy by day two, but this system miraculously leaves my hair feeling light, clean, and beautifully fluffy. It also shares that fresh, herbal vibe that I love. Alternating between BOMME and DIVI has been working great for me.

- Deep Conditioning To keep my ends and hair strands super hydrated, I will wear this Nutraharmony Deep Conditioning hair mask (less than $15!!) while working on computer for about 30 minutes or so. I find it best to apply it from about half-way down on my hair to the ends, and I really work it in. This Nutraharmony mask is spectacular for preventing split ends and keeping my hair shiny and healthy, without adding extra product build up on my scalp (where for me, it’s not needed).

3. Break Up with Daily Washing & Heavy Heat
Constant styling and overwashing stress out the hair follicle and dry out the scalp. Remember the garden metaphor? We want the soil hydrated and clean, not scorched.
Wash Less: Try to avoid washing your hair every single day to let your scalp’s natural oils do their job.
Air Dry First: I limit heat tool usage to just 1–2 times a week. When I do use a blow dryer, I let my hair air-dry naturally as much as possible first, only using the dryer at the very end to smooth everything out and shape it.
4. The Smart Way to Style
When you do want to add some bounce, step away from traditional high-heat curling irons that cause breakage.
The Go-To Tool: I swear by the Negative Ion Curling Iron Brush. It is by far the gentlest tool I’ve ever used on fragile hair. You can use it to create quick, smooth straight styles or soft, bouncy curls without the intense heat damage. Watch me use it here.
The Verdict: There are plenty of great options to choose from on Amazon, but I love mine so much I actually bought two—one for home and an extra to keep at our vacation house so I’m never without it!
A Quick Note of Encouragement: Hair loss can feel incredibly discouraging, but your follicles might just need a little extra resuscitation. Start with the scalp health, protect your hair from heat, and give it time to heal. You’ve got this!
