The new year is often an excellent time to take stock of your life and your health and look for any changes you can make to improve both. Good health can support a good life and ensure that your body is in the best condition possible to help you do what you need to do each day and live your life on your terms.
But what are the best changes you can make to improve your health easily?
Get More Sleep
Sleep is the foundation of everything you do. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, then your health and body will suffer from more than exhaustion. While sleep doesn’t come easy for some people, changing how you approach bedtime and putting habits in place that can help you sleep will enable you to improve your overall health. A good night’s sleep is instrumental in regulating your mood, hormones, appetite, and ability to improve brain function and energy levels and decrease your risk of heart disease and dementia, amongst other conditions.
There are over 28 million smokers in the US, and smoking can be really harmful to your health. Aside from the contributing factors in developing lung and heart disease, smoking is also bad for your skin and dental health, and it can prematurely age you, not to mention affect how you smell to others. Giving up smoking isn’t easy, but it can have many health benefits, and your risk of developing lung cancer decreases with every year you are smoke-free. You can quit cold turkey, use products like on pouches to help you get your nicotine hit without having to smoke or use gum or other products to help you stop.
Make it your aim to move more in the next year. Moving more can simply mean you leave the car at home and walk short distances, join the gym, or take up a new sport or dance class, for example. You don’t need to commit to a vigorous gym schedule that requires you to work out 5 days a week. Simply moving more, committing to walking more steps, and being active can be beneficial and improve your health. An excellent place to start is to walk for an extra 1,000 steps per day more than you currently do. This is an additional 10 to 15 minutes of walking, depending on how fast you walk. If you can hit the 10,000 steps (which will take around an hour and 40 minutes to complete each day) go for it, but this isn’t a requirement for good health; just being more active is enough.
Drink More Water
Water is the best drink you can consume. Our bodies are made up of 60% water, and we need to make sure we are drinking enough to replenish supplies and allow our bodies to function correctly. You can get water from various sources, both food and drink, but making sure you drink plain or water flavored via natural sources can help boost your intake.
Dehydration can cause headaches, lethargy, sunken eyes, dry mouth, and dizzy spells if it’s severe. The amount of water you need to drink depends on your lifestyle and the environment, but aiming for around 8 cups per day is an excellent place to start.
