Preparing the artichoke:

  1. Wash the artichoke carefully. Trim the stem so the artichoke can sit upright.

  2. Using a serrated knife, cut off about an inch from the top. You can also trim the pointed tips of the leaves with kitchen shears.

  3. Rub the cut surfaces with lemon to prevent browning.

Steaming the artichoke:

  1. Fill a large pot with about an inch of water. You can add a squeeze of lemon juice, some garlic cloves, or a bay leaf for extra flavoring to the water.

  2. Place a steamer basket in the pot, making sure the artichoke will sit above the water level.

  3. Put the artichoke in the steamer basket, stem side down, and cover the pot tightly.

  4. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer. Steam the artichoke for 25-45 minutes, depending on the size. The artichoke is done when a leaf pulls out easily and the stem is tender when pierced with a knife.
