The Bold & The Beautiful at the PMA

The Bold & The Beautiful at the PMA

It’s been almost FIVE YEARS since I attended the PMA Fresh Summit and I’m still reeling from the unusual finds from the Expo show. Here are some foods that I must classify as Bold & The Beautiful, as they are all stunning!

First up, I’m crushing on this one. Bad. Have you ever had a Bloody Mary Popsicle? (pictured above) Well, I have and I can’t get it out of my mind. This special popsicle was created for the PMA Fresh Summit event with the fresh tomatoes from Del Campo’s T’mates and pure genius from Popsicle Culture. Although these are alcohol-free, you won’t care because this Bloody Mary on a stick is a delicious combo of fresh tangy tomato blended with pepper and spices. Popsicle Culture sells out of the Brentwood & Melrose Farmer’s markets. If you are lucky enough to be in the area, stop by and get one of these or one of her other creative frozen culinary masterpieces. Or, just make a trip there to get one or ten. They are THAT good.

Gooseberries a.k.a Goldenberry

These bright yellow smooth and shiny berries come wrapped in their own papery plant ‘sheath’ that protects them until you are ready to eat them. These mild sweet and citrusy tasting berries are grown in both North & South America. This particular batch that I tasted was from South America grown by Volcano Produce. Formerly known as the Gooseberry, the yellow berry was renamed Goldenberry to make it sound more palatable as most people don’t know what a Gooseberry is – and, let’s face it, any berry coming from a Goose may be questionable. Comprised of many nutritious qualities including vitamins A, B and C, proteins, anti-oxidants, and various minerals. Recipe idea – These are delicious halved and tossed in a salad with goat cheese, candied nuts and a light vinaigrette. Look for Goldenberries this holiday season and impress your guests with this tasty and exotic treat.

Mushrooms

Mushroom lovers rejoice! The fine mushroom growers from To-Jo Mushrooms in Pennsylvania are cultivating exotic and delicious mushrooms for you to select from your grocery store. There are SO many beautiful fungi to choose from, you’ll have a hard time deciding. They offer exotic blends, maitakes, royal trumpets, chanterelles (yum!), oysters and more! These range from delicate to hearty in flavor. If you are on the east coast, you’re in luck as they are mostly available there. Hope they make their way out to the West Coast soon!

Hidden Rose Apple

These gorgeous apples by Dragon Berry Produce have a beautiful red blush color inside and have a distinct and delicious sweet-tart taste. The color and sweetness of these hard-to-grow apples are enhanced by the mild climate of the Pacific Northwest with its warm days and cool nights. Grown using the highest environmental standards, all Hidden Rose Apples® are certified organic. If you can find them, grab ‘em! Such a treat! Find out more at http://www.dragonberryproduce.com/
