I put a lot of love and thought into my meal planning when I entertain. While I do ask my guests if they have any food allergies, sensitivities or preferences, sometimes I forget– or worse, my guests will not tell me about foods they just don’t like. I’ve had bowls of fresh salads, casseroles, rice dishes passed over by friends because there was one ingredient or spice in it they didn’t care of, or the offending food gave them digestive issues. Had I just known about the problem foods, I would have modified my recipes so everyone had something to enjoy!
When I was invited to test out the Selectivor app, the food nerd in me was beyond excited. I had a lot of fun going through the Selectivor set-up and creating my own food preference profile. Once I saw how easy it was, I created an event through the app and started inviting friends and family to create their own personal food profiles. Users may simply create a profile via their website as well.
My friends and family started pinging me back with comments almost immediately. “This is cool.” “I just finished my profile.”
I opened the Free Selectivor app and although I thought I KNEW everyone, there were quite a few food surprises! I realized that the Selectivor program created a stress-free way to share your likes and dislikes, and it’s so much easier than rattling off a list in person.
From the Selectivor website:
Selectivor is technology for selective eaters – people on any type of diet or people with food allergy, intolerances, sensitivities, restrictions or strong preferences. Create your custom eating profile so you know what you can eat. Share your eating preferences with others so they’re aware of your food preferences. And create groups and events where you know what all your guests can eat together. Always eat your way by creating your FREE personalized food profile at http://www.selectivor.com.

So, now to put the app to the test! On my meal plan for my upcoming event, I was going to make an easy chilled Tangy Bean & Corn salad.
The Recipe:
- 1 can of black beans
- 1 can of red beans
- 2 cups of frozen corn
- juice from 1 large lemon
- 2 cloves of garlic, diced fine
- 1/2 cup diced cilantro
- 1/ cup diced red and green peppers
- 1 tsp cayenne
- 2 tablespoons of quality olive oil
- 2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar
I opened up the Selectivor app to check my ingredients list and found out that TWO of my ingredients are the AVOID list! Yikes!
One friend doesn’t like cilantro and the other can’t digest peppers!
Armed with this handy information, here’s how I am modifying the recipe:
- 1 can of black beans
- 1 can of red beans
- 2 cups of frozen corn
- juice from 1 large lemon
- 2 cloves of garlic, diced fine
1/2 cup diced cilantro– substitute out with green onions & I am going to have cilantro on the side!1/ cup diced red and green peppers– – substitute out with diced heirloom tomatoes- 2 tablespoons of quality olive oil
- 1 tsp cayenne
- 2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar
These are easy fixes, and now my dish may be enjoyed by everyone! There’s no awkwardness, no hungry guests and it makes me feel great that I KNEW about these dislikes ahead of time!
