Brain Exercise with Puzzles

Brain Exercise with Puzzles

This post is sponsored by Jigsaw Puzzle but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

I eat a healthy diet and exercise but have found that in my down-time I was aimlessly surfing social media and watching cat videos. As I was filling my brain with useless information that’s a time-suck,  I realized I was also neglecting my brain.  The brain needs to be exercised like the rest of the body but in a less sweaty manner!

Based on the famous MacArthur study, keeping the mind active with jigsaw puzzles and other mind-flexing activities can actually lead to a longer life expectancy, a better quality of life, and reduce our chances of developing certain types of mental illness, including memory loss, dementia, and even Alzheimer’s Disease (by an amazing third). As I have been starting to walk into rooms and forget what I was there to do,  I realized that the singing cat videos were not helping me in the least bit.

Therefore, I have started doing my brain exercises or Jigsaw Puzzles in the morning while sipping coffee, or while waiting for my daughter at golf practice. Since the app is on my phone, is convenient for me to play anywhere!

The app Jigsaw Puzzle is a great option for puzzlers of all ages. There are 20,000 free puzzles to choose from and they can easily be played on a cell phone or tablet.

I love how colorful and vivid the puzzles are.  Decision making is the first brain exercise, as sometimes I have a hard time choosing a jigsaw puzzle because the images range by topic, like nature, candy, animals, etc.  The candy-themed puzzles just make me happy. I don’t eat candy anymore, but I enjoy putting the colorful sweets together as a visual treat. The most satisfying part of the game is when I slide the correct piece in position, the piece glows and it locks in. It’s like an instant reward that makes me want to continue solving!

After playing the Jigsaw Puzzle games for over a week I found that I needed to start with a lower game piece level. The app allows me to select how many puzzle pieces I would like to use to solve the puzzle, which allows me to modify the game based on my time or current mood. If I have just a few minutes, I’ll set the level to 24 or lower. If I have some time to kill while waiting for my daughter, I’ll set the number of pieces to a higher more challenging level. The highest level is 400 pieces for those who are really ambitious!

Jigsaw Puzzle also allows other cool customizations like backgrounds, time clock settings or music while playing.

The colorful puzzles from the Jigsaw Puzzle game have become addicting but in a good way! I feel stimulated and accomplished after I finish a challenging puzzle, so I’m motivated to keep dialing up the difficulty.
