Summertime Budget Crunch
Looking through the Summer Camp catalogs, I see that most full-day camp options range between $250-$350 a week. Of course, all the camps that my daughter wants to do are on the higher end. So, let's see - 8 weeks of camp could set me back around $2850. Nice.
Frustrated with the lack of options, I called some friends. Apparently, I am a victim of my own laziness. The true saver-moms are already dialed in, and signed-up for camps and activities that are sponsored, or supported by 3rd party organizations (City/Churches). Call your local Churches, even if you don't go there, and find out what summer camp options they offer. Often you'll find they offer reduced camps for as little as $40-$50 a week. The Churches offer these camps as a way for new people to check them out as a group, so don't feel bad about signing your child up.
Many parents are in the same boat as we are, so we are making our own 'camp'. Basically you find a group of local parents who are willing to take 3-4 kids for one day, and entertain/supervise them. You will have to put in your time, but you will reap the benefits of full-day fun-time care for your kids, and they will have summer memories to last!
Home Activities: Stock up on Bubbles at the dollar store, and don't forget how fun things like automatic sprinklers are. On a hot summer day, a sprinkler, popsicles, chalk, bubbles & some outdoor sports equipment will easily entertain.
Because camps are so costly, now is a great time to see if that hefty camp fee may be better used towards a family vacation. Many airlines are deeply discounting rates, especially for last minute travel. So, if you can keep your schedule flexible, you could score cross-country airfare from under $100 each way! Hotels are also offering deals, especially if you do mutli-night stays. You'll either get a significant discount, or even a free night. If you belong to AAA, don't forget to check on these rates, as they are often cheaper than listed internet rates.
