Why spend a fortune buying things like play dough, fingerpaints, and bubbles, when you can make your own? Below you'll find the recipes, and other easy to make kid projects such as pinecone treats for birds, and a pet photo frame.


Finger Paint

Ingredients:
Clear liquid soap
Tempera Paint (dry, powder kind)

Simply add tempera paint to clear liquid soap.
The soap allows for easy clean up


Pinecone Treats for Birds


Make your feathered friends a little snack that they will appreciate while battling the elements of winter.

 

Instructions

  • STEP 1: Cover your working area with old newspapers and have your supplies at the ready.
  • STEP 2: Fill a pie tin or shallow baking dish with birdseed.
  • STEP 3: Twist the midsection of a red or green pipe cleaner around the stem of each pine cone and pull the two ends out straight.
  • STEP 4: Use a spoon to carefully cover the pine cones with creamy peanut butter (about 2 tablespoons per cone).
  • STEP 5: Roll the pine cones around in the birdseed until they're completely covered.
  • STEP 6: Set the finished products on newspaper until you have coated each pine cone.
  • STEP 7: Hang the ornaments by twisting the pipe cleaner ends around branches of a tree.
  • STEP 8: Sit back and watch the birds flock to your yard.

PET PHOTO FRAME!

You Will Need:

dog biscuits, kitty treats or other favors to represent the animal you will feature in the photo (for a bird, how about small seed bells, or other bird toys)
1 picture of your favorite animal
acrylic paint- any color
fine tipped marker
craft glue
paint brush- I used a small foam one as they don't leave brush marks
5X5 inch piece of cardboard or photo matting- cereal boxes work great
craft knife
sealer- Design Master Super Surface Sealer clear Sealer and Satin Finish 383 works great
ribbon or magnet

Instructions:

1. Center your picture on top of cardboard and trace around it.
2. Use craft knife to cut out hole for picture
3. Paint the front of the frame in the color of your choice
4. Glue treats on to the frame.
5. On one of the treats or an open space on the frame write the animal's name, plus the dates of birth and death if they are now little angels. 6. Seal with sealer
7. Oo the back side of the frame glue or tape the picture in place
8. Add ribbon or magnet to the back to hang.


Scratch and Sniff Paint

Ingredients:
Paint
Your favorite extracts (like orange)

Simply add the a few drops of the extract to the paint. Then after the paint dries scratch and it will smell like the extract


Play dough

Ingredients:
Salt
Flour
Water
Food coloring

Mix together 1 cup of salt with 1 cup of flour in a large bowl. Slowly add 1 cup of cool water with the food coloring. Continue mixing and then need together until the dough is smooth and elastic like without being sticky.


Putty

Ingredients:
1 cup of school glue (white Elmer’s type)
1 cup liquid corn starch
Food Coloring

Mix together food coloring and glue. Then in a large bowl pour the liquid starch over the glue and food coloring mixture. Gentle fold together with a spoon until glue begins to solidify. After glue solidifies pour off any extra cornstarch. The putty will become more rubbery and harder as you work it. Once it becomes as solid as you desire, rinse with cold water and store in the refrigerator.


Side walk Chalk

Ingredients:
Plaster of Paris
Water
Molds
Tempera Paint (dry and powered type)

Mix together 1 cup of plaster of paris with 1/2 cup of water and tempera paint. (the more paint added the darker the chalk color will be) Pour the mixture into the mold of your choice and let it dry.


Ooblick
A strange solid that turns into liquid when it is touched.

Ingredients:
Cornstarch
Water

Add one part water for 2 parts cornstarch. You want to make the cornstarch semi-liquid.


Bubbles

Ingredients:
Liquid detergent
Water
Food Coloring
Sugar

Mix together ¼ a cup of liquid soap with ½ a cup of water. Add in a few drops of food coloring and a half a teaspoon of sugar. Then let the mixture sit over night.


Play dough you can eat! (Not for those with peanut allergies!)

Peanut Butter

Ingredients:
3/12 cups Peanut Butter
4 cups powdered milk
3/12 cups corn syrup
4 cups powdered sugar

Mix and Knead together all of the ingredients

Oatmeal

Ingredients:
2 cups peanut butter
2 cups of dry oatmeal
2 cups powdered milk
2/3 cup of honey

Mix together and knead all the ingredients

Chocolate

Ingredients:
10 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/3 cup of light corn syrup

Melt the chocolate until smooth and creamy; add the corn syrup and blend.

Pour the chocolate mixture onto wax paper and spread until it is ½ inches thick. Let it stiffen overnight.

Sugary Dough

Ingredients:
1/3 cup margarine
1 lb powdered sugar
1/3 cup light corn syrup
Food coloring
¼ tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract

Mix together all the ingredients and then add in the powdered sugar. Knead until smooth.
